How special vehicles drive safer and more economically – with the proper tyre pressure

Wiehl, 29/9/2022 --- Tyre pressure has a major impact on the transport safety as well as the fuel consumption of the trailer. The increasing popularity of automatic tyre pressure control systems is no surprise, as they quickly pay for themselves and meet new EU regulations. BPW also offers its award-winning AirSave system for low loader trailers and special vehicles with special axle and running gear designs.
Ever more trailers are driving with automatic tyre pressure control system - and even non-experts can see it upon closer look: A tube between the wheel hub and the tyre reveals that the vehicle is always driving with the optimum tyre pressure, saving significantly on fuel. The capsule adapter shows that it is the "AirSave" system from BPW, a winner of innovation and sustainability awards. The leading supplier of axles and running gear solutions for transport has further developed tyre pressure control in many respects. BPW also offers the system for steering axles, and even vehicles that are equipped with stub axles or swing axles without a continuous axle beam can be equipped with AirSave. Despite the limited installation space available, the tyre pressure control system can be safely and easily installed by the vehicle manufacturer.
Using the example of a 10-12 ton four-axle low loader semi-trailer, which drives with twin wheels and an average pressure deviation of ten percent in the tyres, BPW product manager Caren Freudenberg makes it clear that AirSave quickly pays off, even for special vehicles: “Many low loader trailers drive around 80,000 kilometres a year – AirSave saves around 350 litres of fuel with this type of mileage. Taking into account the reduced tyre wear, with the current diesel price of two euros per litre, transport companies can save around 1,750 euros per vehicle a year.”
It is also worth ordering the running gear with AirSave for special vehicles that cover far fewer kilometres per year. The deciding factor is safety: A gradual loss of pressure in the tyre causes it to heat up, and without AirSave this can quickly result in a tyre bursting. And that could have devastating financial consequences: special transports of large and heavy industrial components, wind turbine blades or building elements require months of meticulous preparation, official approval procedures, road closures with police support - all of which can be ruined by a flat tyre. Because AirSave continuously pumps air, the emergency running properties of the affected tyres improve in such cases. This way, a driver can still get to their destination - even with a slow-leaking flat tyre - and then repair it in peace. Typical BPW: AirSave is so robustly constructed that it works reliably even under extreme operating conditions in off-road operation, e.g. on construction sites.

Since mid-2022, tyre pressure monitoring systems regulation – not only in the EU: a set of regulations designated "UN ECE R 141" has been established by the Economic Commission of the United Nations; the parties in the agreement include virtually all industrialised nations worldwide. From July 2022 these regulations will apply to all new vehicle type approvals, and from July 2024 tyre pressure monitoring will be mandatory for all newly registered trailers: the automatic detection of pressure loss, the warning to the driver and also the response time of a tyre pressure control system are precisely defined. With AirSave, BPW exceeds the specifications of the new standard, for example through wireless networking with the telematics system from idem telematics: The driver can be warned about pressure deviations using a smartphone app, and the fleet manager or dispatcher are also informed in real time.
